Now imagine a student who types a word problem into an AI tool, copies the answer, and moves on. The tool did the thinking. The student learned nothing. That’s cognitive outsourcing.
The distinction matters more than any specific AI tool you bring into your classroom this year. It determines whether technology amplifies learning or replaces it. And most of the current conversation about AI in education, at conferences, in district offices, in product demos, doesn’t make it.
